Power supply voltage multiplier can be acts as transformer or it can be direct AC line operated. The transformer less type used equipment that needs a high DC voltage output and also to reduce the cost and reduce weight of the device.

Basic transformer less circuit doubler is shown in Figure. To see how this works, let diode half wave (X1) is attached to produce a positive voltage line B_ of120 volt. X2 diode is then added to the circle, but connected in reverse will polarity. This -120 V X2 diode relative to the ground. This "adds so produce a voltage of 240 volts between + B and B-points.

The problem with this power supply is that B-attached to the chassis of the device. This makes it Case "hot", which is producing a shock hazard. When you take the case or cover this type of equipment, always be careful and you have to connect the device to the transformer insulation.
